Exploring the Galaxy & Beyond - By: Babak A. Tafreshi
The Milky Way towards the galactic center in Sagittarius. Bright orange star Antares (the heart of celestial Scorpion) in near the center and planet Saturn is to the right. The observatory near the 4205m (13800ft) summit of Mauna Kea volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii, is recognized as one of the world's premier astronomical research facilities. Hawaii's isolation in the mid-Pacific Ocean and the high elevation of Maunakea makes it one of the best locations on Earth for astronomical observations. On the left is one of the twin Keck telescopes (each with a 10m mirror) and on the right is the 8-meter Subaru telescope.
