The Milky Way above wind turbines and solar panels at the remotely located Cerro Armazones Observatory, an oasis in the Atacam Desert. Operated jointly by the Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) in Germany and the Catholic University of the North (UCN) in Chile, the Cerro Armazones Observatory is isolated from any outsource power and is fully operated by solar and wind energy, an entirely "Green" observatory. In the sky the Milky Way appears from Scorpius, Centaurus, and the Southern Cross (Crux) on the left (east-southeast) to Canis Major (with bright star Sirius), and Orion on the right (west). The Large Magellanic Cloud, a Milky Way's neighboring galaxy, is in the middle toward the south, next to bright star Canopus. The pale green and red bands in the sky are airglow; natural emission of the Earth upper atmosphere. This astronomical research station is located on the slopes of Cerro Armazones, a mountain in the Atacama Desert, Antofagasta Region of Chile, which will host the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), an optical/infrared telescope with a 39.3 m diameter primary mirror, the largest on Earth. It should be operational in the early 2020s.
