Red Planet Above Atacama Desert - By: Babak A. Tafreshi
Mars at its brightest during opposition with the Earth. It appears here rising next to star Spica in Virgo from Cerro Armazones mountain in the Atacama Desert of Chile; the site chosen for the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), an optical/infrared telescope with a 39.3 metre diameter primary mirror, the largest on Earth. It should be operational in the early 2020s.
