Mars and Chain of Volcanoes - By: Babak A. Tafreshi
The night sky above the chain of volcanoes near the town of San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile, near Bolivia border, including the almost 6000-meter high Licancabur with a perfect cone (middle left). In the sky constellation Leo is above Licancabur with bright star Regulus or Alpha Leonis. Mars, as its opposition with the Earth (closest and brightest) is the bright yellow-red object in the middle, next to blue star Spica, the brightest star of Virgo. On the far right along the Southern Milky Way are bright stars Alpha and Beta Centauri, the Southern Cross (Crux), and Carina Nebula.
