A green meteor streaks the sky over the New Technology Telescope (NTT) at the European Southern Observatory site at La Silla, Chile. The NTT has a mirror with a diameter of 3.5 metres and is used for making observations at optical and infrared wavelengths. The NTT was completed in 1989 and has successfully demonstrated the technology intended for use in the Very Large telescope which is being built at Cerro Paranal, Chile. The high altitude of La Silla (2400 metres), and the clear air above it, make the site an ideal location for astronomical observations.
