Evening twilight over La Silla Observatory, operated by the European Southern Observatory (ESO), it sits at about 2400 meters above sea level on the outskirts of the Chilean Atacama Desert. La Silla was ESO’s first observatory, inaugurated in 1969. The moon shines next to Jupiter. In the middle is the 3.58-metre New Technology Telescope (NTT). This telescope housing was considered a technological breakthrough when completed in 1989. On the far right is the 3.6-metre telescope, the main telescope on La Silla, home to the world's foremost extrasolar planet hunter: the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS).
