The Large Magellanic Cloud is photographed in a single-exposure telephoto view from the La Silla observatory, Chile. In the foreground is the 15-meter diameter dish antenna of SEST or the Swedish-ESO Submillimeter Telescope (now decommissioned). The Large Magellanic Cloud is a dwarf satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, about 160,000 light-years away. The prominent pink-red patch just right of the galaxy center is 30 Doradus or the Tarantula Nebula; a magnificent star-forming region about 1,000 light-years across.
