Deep Sky Nightscape   -  By: Babak A. Tafreshi

The Rosette Nebula in the constellation Monoceros appears in a single exposure telephoto image, above the William Herschel Telescope, a 4.20 m reflecting telescope located at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain. The Rosette nebula is 2.5 times wider than the Moon disc but considering Rosette distance of over 5000 light years it is a giant cosmic cloud 65 Light Years wide, in fact 200 billion times wider than the Moon! Creating such images only a decade ago was not possible without photomontage but today a modified DSLR camera and a portable tracking mount equipped with a nebula filter enables single exposure deep images of night sky and a foreground. See more of my deep sky nightscapes. La Palma, the location of this image, is a stargazers paradise, and the place for one of my annual astrophotography workshops, AstroMaster; one week of lessons and imaging sessions.
