Canopus and the Magellanic Clouds - By: Babak A. Tafreshi
Bright star Canopus and the Magellanic Clouds are photographed from the equator in the Samburu National Reserve in Kenya. In the foreground is an acacia tree. The Large and Small Magellanic Clouds are dwarf satellite galaxies, two of the Milky Way's satellite, about 160,000 and 210,000 light-years away. Much closer to the Earth, only 100 km above the surface, the Earth upper atmosphere glows faintly at the edge of space which creates airglow in the night sky. Both green and red airglow are visible in this image.
