At the Edge of Caldera - By: Babak A. Tafreshi
Evening twilight begins in La Palma, Canary Islands. From this vantage point clouds dance in the Caldera de la Taburiente. The 10-km wide volcanic crater (with walls tower 2000m over the caldera floor) dominates the northern part of the island. The caldera originated some 2 million years ago with a massive shield volcano. On the edge of the caldera at left the domes of large research telescopes of Roque de los Muchachos Observatory are visible. There are about a dozen major telescopes on this excellent observing site.
