Cosmic Clouds in Cygnus - By: Babak A. Tafreshi
This single exposure image of constellation Cygnus, the Swan, in the band of the Milky Way, has recorded many red emission nebulae including the famous North America nebula near bright star Deneb at the lower left. Also notable is the Butterfly emission nebula around star Gamma Cygni. More interesting is the faint scattered clouds at the lower right. These are the remains of an exploded star. This supernova remnant is known as the Cygnus Loop or the Veil Nebula. It is 3 degrees wide (6 times the diameter, or 36 times the area of the full moon). The source supernova exploded some 5,000 to 8,000 years ago. Date: June 2013
