I was on my way to the November 2013 total solar eclipse in the remote Turkana region of northern Kenya. The land trip to Turkana is very long (several days) on rough road. The country landscape changes from green forests and tropical Savannah near Mount Kenya to desert in the north as you approach the Ethiopia border. The main landmarks on the flat land are lone umbrella-like acacia trees, each in their own ever-lasting solitude several miles away from the next one, hearing nothing than the whispering wind and dust devils. This tropical desert is near Marsabit and not far my destination Lake Turnaka. In a dry environment like this rainstorm (visible in the picture) is rare and highly welcomed by the desert life. The area was much greener and inhabitable in the past.The World Heritage area of Turkana is known as the cradle of humankind. Fossils of the earliest human ancestors have been found here, down to 3.5 million years old.
