Crown Imperial flowers, of the genus Fritillaria, grow wild on the Zagros Mountains near the town of Chelgerd in Kuhrang area, a residency of Bakhtiari tribe in southwest Iran. The flowers are locally known as Inverted or Upside-down tulips, and named Mary’s tears (Ashkeh Maryam) in the local Luri language. The plant is native to Iran and Anatolian high altitude areas as well as the Himalayan foothills in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
