Light Pollution and the Galaxy - By: Babak A. Tafreshi
A 360-degree panorama of the Milky Way arch, rising over the Lake of Fire (Lagoa_do_Fogo) in the Sao Miguel island of Portugal, Azores, Atlantic Ocean. This is a volcanic crater lake in the center of the island. The light of Vila Franca do Campo, a town at the southern shore of the island, appears at the horizon on the right and illuminates the clouds over the lake. On the left light of the two largest towns of the island, Ponta Delgada nd Riberia Grande vanishes the night sky. In the sky, Antares, the bright star that marks the Scorpion's heart, is on the right next to the bright bulge of the galaxy. The three bright stars of Stars of the Summer Triangle (Vega, Deneb, and Altair) are in the upper middle, along the Milky Way. Polaris, the north star, and the Big Dipper are in the middle left.
