Night Hides a World But Reveals a Universe - By: Babak A. Tafreshi
As seen on Astronomy Picture of the Day, Night Hides A World But Reveals a Universe." A Persian proverb. The Milky Way and planet Venus in the evening twilight over Lake Turkana, northern Kenya. Venus appears almost like a grand supernova exploding in the central bulge of the galaxy. Venus was almost aligned with the galactic center in Sagittarius that night (2 degrees, lower left of Venus), though with the physical distance of over 25,000 light years! To the left of Venus is the bright Sagittarius Star Cloud and 4 degrees above Venus is the M8 or Lagoon nebula appearing in red.
