Celestial Bears above Sahara - By: Babak A. Tafreshi
Stars of the Ursa Major and Ursa Minor (with Polaris near the rock) stand above moonlit sand dunes and eroded sandstone cliffs in the remote Tassili National Park in the southern Algeria near Niger border. Tassili National Park is a World Heritage Site in the heart of Sahara desert. Prehistoric skygazers surely witnessed a similar sky. In addition to dramatic sandstone formations, the Tassili region is noted for rock paintings and archaeological sites dating to neolithic times. Read the report of TWAN imaging trip to the heart of Sahara. Date: June 2009
