Inscription of Darius the Great - By: Babak A. Tafreshi
The large relief and inscription of Darius the Great in Behistun (Bisotun), a World Heritage Site near Kermanshah, Iran, along the ancient trade route between Iran plateau and Mesopotamia. The relief is made on an inaccessible cliff 100m above ground level, ordered by Darius I sometime after his coronation as king of the Persian Empire (Achaemenid era) in 522 BC. The relief portrays Darius in life size holding a bow and treading on the chest of the defeated enemy. It also shows 10 smaller defeated enemies. In 1,200 lines of multi-lingual inscriptions, 25 meters wide, the king's battles against the governors who attempted to take apart the Empire is explained.
